UIC has a long and cherished tradition of recognizing its employees for outstanding merit and years of service. UIC Human Resources works in conjunction with academic and administrative units and affiliated University organizations to honor these achievements at the annual Employee Recognition Award Ceremony held each fall.
In addition to service and merit recipients honored at the Employee Recognition Award Ceremony, numerous awards for faculty, research, and individual department achievements are awarded throughout the year by various University units and organizations.
Each November is Employee Recognition Month at UIC. This special time of year includes departmental ceremonies as well as campus wide programs, planned for the purpose of honoring our faculty and staff. In addition to campus wide and individual department merit awards earned for outstanding achievements, UIC honors its employees for years of service beginning at five years and continuing after each five year increment. In 2013, UIC honored over 1,900 employees for years of service. We were thrilled to honor ten employees for their 40 years of service to the university.
Held each year at the UIC Forum, the Employee Recognition Award Ceremony is the official start of Employee Recognition Month. This campus-wide program serves to publicly recognize work and community accomplishments. Employees with 25 or more years of service are honored each year, along with various campus-wide merit awards. A reception at the conclusion of the ceremony allows recipients and guests to visit and congratulate those being honored. All members of the UIC community are welcome to attend.
The 2014 Employee Recognition Award Ceremony and Reception will be held on Tuesday, November 4 at the UIC Forum. We anticipate over 700 UIC employees and guests to attend the event to honor this year’s recipients. Those awards to be recognized include the Award of Merit, CAPE Award, INSPIRE and Luminary Awards, and campus accolades of the Woman of the Year, the Janice Watkins Award, and UI Hospital awards Class Act and Academy Award. Service Year Recognition honorees will include those celebrating 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50 years of eligible service to the university.

We are pleased to present the names of those being honored as 2014 recipients of the following UIC awards:
Service Year Recognition Awards, 5 through 50 years of service; the UIC Award of Merit; CAPE Award; INSPIRE Award; Woman of the Year Award; Janice Watkins Award; and UI Hospital & Health Sciences System’s Class Act Award and Academy Award.

Service Recognition Awards recognize faculty members, Academic Professionals and Civil Service employees for years of service to UIC in five-year increments starting with 25 years of service. Departmentally, employees are recognized for every 5 years of service.
Service Year Policy
Award of Merit recognizes outstanding academic professionals and civil service employees. It is a university-wide honor available to all UIC campus staff members who exhibit service, commitment and dedication. Award recipients receive $2,500 and a memento gift. The included links will outline the nomination instructions, process, and past recipients.
CAPE, the Chancellor’s Academic Professional Excellence Award, was established in 1988 to recognize the demonstrated excellence of Academic Professional staff members. Encouraging professional development, the award demonstrates the institution’s high regard for the contributions of this key segment of the University community. The CAPE award is based on peer review broadly selected from the ranks of Academic Professionals on campus. A standing Committee of APAC, the CAPE Selection Committee is chaired by an APAC member. Made up of Academic Professionals from both the east and west campuses, the Selection Committee may include past CAPE recipients, UIC faculty, and Academic Professionals. Support staff or students can make CAPE nominations. Each year, a maximum of six Academic Professionals may receive the CAPE Award. The award provides a $1,000 permanent increase to the individual’s salary, along with a $2,000 one-time cash award.
INSPIRE Awards recognize individuals who consistently, and over long periods of time based their every action on UIC’s Core Values: Integrity, Nurture, Service, Pride, Intellect, Respect, and Excellence. An annual UIC Luminary Award is also given to the INSPIRE candidate who represents the pinnacle of service to the campus and its constituents.

The Woman of the Year Award is sponsored annually by the Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Women (CCSW) which honors a woman who consistently works on women’s issues beyond the call of duty and who is an exemplary role model. Award criteria includes: providing service to women at UIC while on the job, responding to issues affecting women, and offering service to women through voluntarism and public support of women’s programs. A committee of CCSW officers and former award winners make the final selection from among the nominees. Winners are honored with a cash award of $1,000 and a reception officiated by the Chancellor.
The Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Women
Janice Watkins Award for Distinguished Civil Service recognizes exceptional support staff for their distinguished civil service. The design for the award is based on three interlocking components signifying the unity of faculty, staff, and students. Awarded to support staff employees who exhibit a pleasant, warm demeanor and provide willing assistance to others, the award is a token of gratitude from the University honoring those who performing their duties with diligence and dedication. Nominations can be submitted by faculty, staff, or students familiar with the nominee’s activities.

The Class Act Award honors employees who act as role models, continuously demonstrating exceptional competence and compassion in the performance of job responsibilities while exemplifying UI Hospital’s five values: Integrity, Innovation, Safety, Accountability and Service Excellence.
Selected by the employee recognition committee from the year’s Class Act recipients, the selected recipient will be the Employee of the Year. This honoree is announced at an annual dinner held in recognition of the year’s Class Act awardees.
