An event observing and celebrating African Americans was first held in February 1926 in Washington D.C. Much later, in February 1969 the Black United Student leaders at Kent State University proposed expanding the observation to Black History Month. This, Black History Month, was celebrated one year later at Kent State University in February, 1970.
In February 2014, UIC is celebrating Black History Month with several events across campus.
